Unit Plan Name: Visual Arts Community

Student Grade: 2nd grade

Unit Objective: The 2nd grade student will learn about the community around them while creating a Historical Portrait, Pointillism Park and Group Community Block.

This unit relates to Ohio Academic Content Standards in the following areas:
2nd Grade, Social Studies

Heritage   7. Recognize the importance of individual action and character and explain how they have made a difference in others' lives with emphasis on the importance of:

Social and political leaders in the United States (e.g., George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Tecumseh, Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony and Martin Luther King Jr.);

Role of Government  1. Identify leaders such as mayor, governor and president, and explain that they are elected by the people.

Human Environment Interaction 5. Compare how land is used in urban, suburban and rural environments.

Diffusion  4. Describe the contributions of significant individuals, including artisans, inventors, scientists, architects, explorers and political leaders to the cultural heritage of the United States.

 

2nd Grade, Language Arts

Aquisition of Vocabulary

1. Use knowledge of word order and in-sentence context clues to support word identification and to define unknown words while reading.
2. Identify words that have similar meanings (synonyms) and wordsthat have opposite meanings (antonyms).

 

2nd Grade, Visual Art

2. Use historical artworks such as paintings, photographs and drawings to answer questions about daily life in the past.

4. Create artworks based on observation of familiar objects and scenes in the environment.

5. Compare the subject matter and ideas in their own artworks with those in the works of others.
